CE marking
The CE (Conformité Européenne) marking is a "passport" recognized by all the 27 Member States of the European Union, enabling a product to be placed on the market in any Member State. CE Marking indicates that a product complies with the basic criteria required by a European technical standard called a harmonised European Norm (EN).
These standards have been established to remove technical barriers to trade for construction products. They are the new reference for national standards.
The Construction Products Directive and the more recent Construction Products Regulation set the foundation for CE marking for construction products.
CE and fire resistance
The Construction Products Directive 89/106/EEC covers a wide range of products requiring fire resistance testing in order to be CE marked. But CE marking by itself doesn’t mean that a product is fire resistant for the intended use, i.e. that it has achieved fire resistance classifications in all types of walls and with any kind of sealing.
In conclusion, correctly specifying and installing passive fire protection products remains fundamental to fire safety in buildings. Even after the CE marking has become effective, one must verify the product’s fire resistance rating for the specific wall types envisaged for a construction site. This information can be found for our CE marked products in the classification overview for each product.
Transparency & safety
CE marking includes technical information in the form of declared values. Hence it is in effect a harmonised technical data sheet. Together with the standard, it gives all the information needed by regulators and actors on the construction market to judge whether the product is suitable for a particular intended use in the country in which it is sold, according to the regulations which apply there.
Uniform assessment methods of the performance of construction products have been compiled in European product standards, for instance the EN 15650:2010 product standard for fire dampers. Fire dampers are evaluated against strict criteria that relate to fire resistance, durability and aeraulic performance. Notified bodies are involved in the certification process, which further validates the certification process.
CE marking for fire dampers and smoke control dampers
For fire dampers, the CE marking became compulsory as from 1 September 2012, following the availability of the product standard for fire dampers EN 15650:2010.
The EN 12101-8 product standard for smoke control dampers was published in August 2011. Since 1st February 2013, all smoke dampers must bear the CE marking.
